We Tried the $5 Screen Repair Hack from TikTok (Here’s What Happened)

It always starts the same way.
A random guy on TikTok squints at the camera, cracks his knuckles, and says:

“Fix your cracked phone screen for $5 using toothpaste and magic.”

You watch him smear Crest all over a cracked iPhone, rub it in like he’s buffing out a car scratch, and then — jump cut! — the screen looks flawless.

You think:

  • “Wait… what?”
  • “Is that real?”
  • “Should I try this before I spend real money?”

We decided to test it for you. Toothpaste, TikTok myth, actual screen… the works.

And here’s what really happened.

The Hack: Toothpaste on a Cracked Screen

The claim:
Toothpaste “fills in” the cracks on your phone screen and polishes it smooth.

The method:

  • Squeeze a pea-sized blob on your cracked screen
  • Rub it in with a paper towel for 5 minutes
  • Wipe clean
  • Watch the cracks… disappear?

Reality:
You now have a cracked phone and minty fresh thumbs.

The Results (Spoiler: Not Great)

After five minutes of circular buffing, here’s what we saw:

  • Minor scratches: still there
  • Major cracks: completely untouched
  • The oleophobic coating on the screen? Gone
  • The screen was now smeary, smelled like spearmint, and looked like it lost a fight with a toothpaste ghost

So no — toothpaste doesn’t fix cracks. It just makes your phone smell like a dentist’s waiting room.

But What About the Other Viral “Fixes”?

We’ll spare you the full experiments, but here’s a quick rundown of the other “hacks” floating around TikTok:

❌ Baking soda + water paste

Did nothing except scratch the glass slightly.

❌ Eraser method

Only erases your time and patience.

❌ Vaseline

Adds a blurry film and collects lint for days.

❌ Nail polish

May temporarily fill a hairline crack… but dries hazy, chips off, and voids any hope of a proper repair.

What Actually Works (Every Time)

If your screen is:

  • Cracked
  • Flickering
  • Ghost-touching you back
  • Bleeding lines or black blobs

…you need a proper screen replacement.

At Barrie Screen Repair, we do it right:

  • OEM-quality parts (LCD or OLED — your choice)
  • Tools made for your device, not a bathroom counter
  • Fast turnaround, often same-day
  • Real warranty you can actually use
  • No toothpaste required

Warranty-Safe Repairs

Got AppleCare or manufacturer warranty?

Here’s the truth: DIY hacks may void your coverage.

If you’ve ever applied:

  • Toothpaste
  • Super glue
  • A Sharpie
  • Or anything involving heat guns or rubbing alcohol

…they’ll know. And they’ll laugh before telling you to buy a new phone.

We offer warranty-safe repairs, and we’ll tell you honestly if you’re still eligible for a manufacturer repair first.

TL;DR

  • TikTok screen repair hacks are hilarious — but don’t actually work
  • Toothpaste = screen damage + minty regret
  • Real repairs = done right, done once, done fast
  • And yes, we fix both iPhone and Android screens
