You’re mid-game and the screen goes black. Or the fan sounds like a leaf blower and your PS5 shuts itself off. Or your Xbox powers on, the light comes up, and you get no signal at all.
Now comes the real question: where do you take it? Collingwood has plenty of places to get a phone fixed, but board-level console repair is a different job. Here’s how the options compare.
If your console is under warranty, do this. It’s free, and it’s what the warranty is for.
If it’s out of warranty, it gets less appealing. You ship it, wait, and hope. Turnaround is usually 2-4 weeks, and the quote for something like an HDMI port can land well above what a local bench charges. You also lose the console for the whole stretch.
Most shops that do phones don’t do consoles. Replacing an HDMI port means desoldering a component on the board, and that takes different tools and a lot of practice. Before you hand it over, ask whether they do the soldering in-house or send it out. If they send it out, you’ve just added a middleman and a few more weeks.
Fine for blowing dust out of the vents. Not fine for a bent HDMI port or reapplying liquid metal on a PS5. One slip lifts a pad off the board, and then a $199 repair turns into a console that can’t be saved.
