You know that moment when your Switch battery is down to 1%, and you go to plug it in… and nothing happens?
No charging icon.
No power.
Just a plastic rectangle mocking you.
If that’s you — don’t panic. You’re not alone. We fix many Nintendo Switch consoles in Barrie every month, and charging issues are one of the top reasons they come in looking like they just lost a Smash Bros. tournament.
Let’s break down what’s really going on — and how to fix it fast.
Let’s start simple.
The Switch is weirdly picky about chargers. It wants:
If you’re using a dusty cord from a Chromebook or your cousin’s Android from 2017, the Switch might simply refuse to acknowledge it exists.
Quick test:
Try your charger on another Switch or USB-C device. Try a proper Nintendo charger on your Switch. If it charges — congrats, it’s the cable.
We’ve pulled everything from cookie crumbs to glitter glue out of Switch ports.
Signs your port is the problem:
Sometimes a cleaning will do.
Sometimes the USB-C port is physically damaged and needs to be replaced.
We handle both at Barrie’s Console Repair HQ.
This one’s painful.
Off-brand docks are one of the most common reasons a Switch stops charging. Some cheaper docks don’t regulate voltage properly, and the result?
💣 Your charging chip gets fried (M92)
🧠 The motherboard takes a hit
😵 Your Switch becomes a very expensive paperweight
This is the “you’re gonna hate #3” moment. Because if your chip is fried, you need board-level repair — and not every shop does that.
(We do, with micro-soldering tools, by the way.)
If your Switch:
The battery may be dead — like, really dead.
Battery replacements are pretty straightforward, and we’ve got them in stock for most models. It’s cheaper than a new Switch and way faster than shipping it to Nintendo.
If everything else checks out and your Switch is still ignoring your charger, the problem is likely internal — usually the M92T36 chip or P13USB chip (yes, those are real names, not Star Wars droids).
These are tiny, soldered chips on the board that regulate power flow. When they fail, your console goes completely dead — even though everything looks fine from the outside.
We do this kind of board-level repair daily. Most shops in Barrie don’t.
At Barrie Screen Repair, we:
If you’ve already taken it apart and it’s held together with tape… we’ve seen worse. Come in anyway.
